Working with theatre to tackle oppressions

From 2 until 11 July 33 youth gathered in Woerden , a small village in the green longue of the Netherlands. During their 9 days stay they learned about each other’s oppressions and how to work at them through theatre. All present youth were or will become active within the organisations who set up this project as partners.

The partner organisations came from Israel (Sadaka Reut), Chechnya (Sintem) and the Netherlands (Critical Mass). All organisations work with youth on discrimination, prejudices, dialogue between different communities and social change.

Primary goal of this training was to educate the members of the organizations in using the method of  the Theatre of the Oppressed in their local projects. There was also space to get to know each other’s culture and the socio-economic and cultural conflicts in the different countries.

It became a very successful and enriching learning experience for the participants. At the end tons of ideas came to the surface on where this method can be useful on tackling oppressions.

Now the time has arrived to put those ideas into concrete projects in Belgium. On the 21st of August the Belgian participants gathered in Antwerp to make plans for the next working year. Together they will design projects where this method can be implemented.
